Portreath is a civil parish, village and fishing port situated on the north coast of Cornwall, about three miles north-west of Redruth, it lies at the eastern edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and within the UNESCO Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. Portreath meaning ‘sandy cove’ has a gently sloping sandy beach which has a full life guard service during the summer months.
The village is a popular family destination centred on the harbour and beach which attracts surfers and bodyboarders. The sandy beach backs onto the village offering a number of facilities including, a pub several shops and cafes.
Portreath was once a busy port shipping copper ore from nearby mines across to Wales for smelting. It was originally known as Basset's Cove after the rich landowner who built the port. The harbour wall now provides experienced surfers with the Vortex, a surf break that runs along side the wall.

Things to do in and around Portreath
Walking
Portreath walking opportunities are vast, from coastal hikes to inland woodland walks, there’s something to suit every level. Surrounding Portreath are spectacular cliffs, and thanks to its coastal location naturally the south-west coast path dominates the walking scene here. The coast path wiggles along the line of the cliffs, it’s easy to access and offers some spectacular views.
Tehidy Country Park, which once formed the core of the Basset family's Tehidy Estate, is today managed by Cornwall Council for public good. It includes the largest area of woodland in west Cornwall (approx. 250 acres) and hosts over 9 miles of paths offering an engaging setting for a variety of uses.
This diverse site, contains a wealth of archaeology and heritage interest as well a multiple habitats, stretching from the urban fringe of the Camborne, Pool, Illogan conurbation, through historic plantations scattered with impressive specimen trees, to the coast at the dramatic North Cliffs, where the site has become renowned for hosting magical tails produced by Rogue Theatre.
